Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming former teacher Brenda Turner back to Lingfield College, where she shared treasured photographs, documents and stories from her many years at the school.
Brenda's connection with Lingfield began in 1984, when her daughter joined the Senior School, when the Sisters of Notre Dame were still at the helm. A few years later, in 1987, Brenda herself joined the Junior School as a teacher. At that time, classes were smaller, and both the Prep and Senior School campuses looked a little different from those we know today.
One of the most significant moments in the school's history that Brenda recalled was the transition from the Sisters of Notre Dame to independent ownership by the parent trustees in the mid-1980s. She brought along a fascinating collection of letters, press releases and documents, offering a valuable glimpse into a transformative chapter in Lingfield's history. The Sisters left a lasting impression on generations of pupils and staff, and Brenda recalled many of them with great affection.
Throughout her career, Brenda was involved in every aspect of school life. Beyond the classroom, she ran craft clubs, taught Irish dancing for St Patrick's Day celebrations, organised hockey training and fixtures, supported productions and assemblies, took part in skiing trips, and helped bring countless community events to life. She also fondly remembers welcoming the first boys into the school and seeing them quickly become an important part of the Lingfield community, as well as talented hockey players.
Alongside her photographs and memories, Brenda shared an invaluable collection of historical materials, including newsletters, prospectuses, Founders' Day programmes, fee information and documents relating to the school's transition in the 1980s. Among the highlights were photographs from her daughter's wedding reception in 1997, which was held on the lawn outside Le Clerc, offering a wonderful reminder of the ways families have remained connected to the College over the years.
Reflecting on her time at Lingfield, Brenda said:
"I have seen many changes over the years and have many happy memories of staff and pupils alike."
We are incredibly grateful to Brenda for sharing her memories and personal archives with us and can’t wait to welcome her back for future events and celebrations for many years to come.
