The annual Alumni Football and Netball Fixtures returned to Lingfield College this September, bringing together former pupils, current students, staff and families for a day packed with sport, incredible weather, cakes, and a trip to The Star.
With a fantastic turnout from alumni, the atmosphere around the courts and pitches was brilliant from start to finish. Alumni travelled back to reconnect with old friends, relive fond memories and see whether they could still compete with the current generation of Lingfield athletes.
This year's netball fixture proved more popular than ever, with enough players taking part to run a round-robin mini tournament.
Three teams took to the court: an alumni side from the leaver years 1999-2000, a team of more recent alumni, and the current Sixth Form squad.
The matches were fiercely competitive but played in great spirit throughout, and one team in particular was very grateful our head netball coach, Gemma, was happy to run through the rules…
In their own words, the team of eight alumni returned to the court with a combined age of 340 years, taking on Lingfield College and what they described as a "frighteningly athletic" recent alumni side.
The team secured an impressive 3-3 draw against the Sixth Form, proving that experience can still rival youth, while the recent alumni side eventually emerged victorious overall, securing an alumni win for the second consecutive year.
As for the team's verdict on the day?
"We'll take the draw. We'll also take the ibuprofen." - We think that perfectly sums up the spirit of alumni sport!
The football fixture was equally entertaining, with the school team and alumni side battling it out in front of a strong crowd of supporters.
The match was closely contested in the opening stages, with the school taking a narrow 2-1 lead into half-time and leaving everything to play for in the second half.
Despite the alumni team's determination and spirited performance, the students gradually extended their advantage as the game progressed. Their quality and sharp finishing ultimately secured a convincing 6-2 victory, retaining the trophy for another year.
A special congratulations goes to Billal Malik, who was named Man of the Match following an outstanding performance.
It was wonderful to see so many alumni, families, staff and students come together for the afternoon. A huge thank you goes to all the PE staff who supported the event, particularly our referees, Gemma and Nigel.
A special thank you also goes to Peter Bedingfield, who continues to support the fixtures each year. The teams gather annually in memory of his son, Paul, making the day not only a celebration of sport and friendship, but also a meaningful opportunity to remember him.
